A special design of the toroidal bearings allows suitably combine the self-aligning properties of spherical roller bearings as well as the ability of axial displacement of bearing rings as it is typical for cylindrical roller bearings. The toroidal bearings are able to compensate the misalignment of inner and outer bearing rings in a range up to 30’.
The design of toroidal bearings features one row of relatively long rollers with moderate crowning and inner and outer bearing rings of corresponding concave symmetrical shape of raceways. A uniform distribution of stresses from the operational load along the whole length of bearing rollers irrespective of the operational alignment situation is another significant advantage of the toroidal bearing design. The optimal load distribution results in bearing running at lower temperatures, lower stresses in bearing components, reduced vibration and ultimately achieving the maximum bearing life.
The toroidal bearings are particularly suitable for arrangements with high radial load, excessive shaft deflection or misalignment of bearing seating. The TTO toroidal bearings have been primarily developed for SLAB CONTINUOUS CASTING ROLLING MILL .
